I'd opt for a lighter. Matches might get wet, no?

Zippo, with Magnesium stick as a back-up

Magnesium and flint is usually my preferred fire starter.
I usually just make a small tinder bundle, put some dryer lint in it and spark it up. For those times when everything is a little wet, the magnesium will get hot enough to get it started.

I second bdavidson's recommendation of dryer lint. It works great! I always carry a mini Bic lighter as my main source of fire and a Light my Fire Scout as a backup. And then, for emergency tinder either dryer lint, char cloth, or both. If you don't know what char cloth is, you can make it yourself with stuff you already have around the house and you can see what the Scout is like in the video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r7uLVGrAt1M

Post edited by: jasonklass, at: 2007/11/01 02:30

Another great fire starter: Cotton Ball Inferno
Take 5-8 cotton balls, smear them in vasoline. (rub it in)Place them in tightly in a Film Canister. Each one will burn for 10-15 minutes.
Place in a tinder bundle, and enjoy.

When it comes to fire starters I take no chances. I always have a mini bic in my pants pocket, a waterproof matchbox with strike anywheres in my pack and a book or two of paper matches. All great fire starting ideas. The cotton balls and vasoline especially. I usually have a couple of esbit tablets along for the trip also. If you need to get a fire going with wet tinder these things are great.

Re:fire starter
I always carry lighters in my pocket. I carry candles in my backpack. I light the candle and then use it to light the fire so as to conserve fuel in the lighter.

Post edited by: NewEnglander, at: 2008/03/17 02:55
