Looking for some opinions
So after reading that excellent post on choosing the right backpack, I'm a little concerned about the one I'm considering. The main reason is that the one I'm considering is on Amazon, which means I'm not going to be able to try it out before I buy it. It seems pretty nice, but I'm not familiar with the brand. Here's the link:

Price point is unfortunately a larger part of this decision than I would like for it to be, and so I might have to find some good ground between finding something good and "making due" for the time being.
Second, I'm considering water filtration systems. My friend had the Katadyn Hiker and it worked like a dream. What are the opinions on water filters here?
Last, I need to find good, reasonably priced clothes. A good pair of cold weather pants and a good pair of convertible pants.
Thanks for any/all help.

Post edited by: natchez, at: 2007/10/12 17:54

Pack looks fine to me...only some trail testing will really let you know. Take a small roll of duct tape with you. That way if something doesnt work as advertised, you can fix it and finish the hike.
Filters work fine...most of the time. I prefer boiling or purification.
As far as clothing, I really like the Columbia stuff. Its not as expensive as some other brands, and it works really well, and is durable. Wal-mart has RemTech (remington) thermal underwear that is a synthetic blend. You can find it in the sporting goods section. Its comfortable to hike in, and lightweight. That combined with some convertible pants, make for decent fall/winter pants.

Okay, my first experience with hiking gear: you get what you pay for. The stitching is horrible and the clasps are cheap (one broke my first time out). I guess this thing will have its uses. It wasn't nearly as big as I was envisioning it. Sorry it took so long to post again.
