Filters Vs Purifiers

To me it seems a purifier is better than a filter, but filters seem to be cheaper and more availible. In particular I am looking at the Katadyn Hiker model. So, are filters good enough for use in North America? How big is the danger of viruses?

I prefer a filter over a purifier mostly because I think the filter makes the water more palatable. I think your choice should depent very much on where you happen to be. Most of my hiking is done at higher altitudes in the mountains- above the agricultural line, so I often do away with the filter altogether. I've been using the katadyn filter for years, and I've never had a problem with a virus, but things might be different where your're from.

I have a pump filter that I have used over the past several years. This past Christmas some friends gave me a Berkee travel filter. It is in the form of a sports drink bottle with an ultra fine filter on it. I have found it very convenient and effective.

When trekking in NZ, it's a great idea to purify, be with with filter or chemicals, yet I tend to give it away as being too cumbersome. I haven't caught anything yet, but I am sure, with my attitude I will some day.

Hi there,

As a hiking guide I use either Iodine or filters in the US and Canada. Definitely in Mexico you'll want a purifier. It also depends where you're going - if it's mainly in the Northeast, Rockies, and Sierras, you're fine with a filters. Filters don't use chemicals - I am a huge fan of the MSR Miniworks. It is slow, but easy to clean and uses NO chemicals.

HI there, I would use a purifier, just to be safe. Most times, you'd be ok with a filter, but it only takes one small virus, and if your way out in the boondocks, well,.... your a long way from help if it disables you. also, the newer chlorine dioxide tablets are more effective than Iodine, or so I've read, and they can actually improve the tast of water. They kill more things than Iodine too. Just my dos centavos..... B) Paul.

Hmmm, interesting... Was looking into filters but, may try the chlorine dioxide tabs... Brand Names?

Took a 3 day trip along the AT with some friends and we used the MSR filters they worked great, no viruses and did clean very easily!
