    going barefoot

    So Im reading the book born to run at the moment. I do a lot of running but i constantly have problems with shins. Ive purchased amazing shoes, ive purchased custom fitting orthodics and it doesnt help. So im reading this book and theyre saying that when you run barefoot you run a little bit differently which end up protecting the body a little bit better.

    Im just curious what everyone thinks about this? You can apply it to hiking as well.

    kind of got me thinking on that. where i run is on the road so it might be a bit hard on my feet i might give it a go some time. i use to run bare foot on grass tracks and loved it. as for hiking it might be good if your ultra light

    I've been hiking with a friend for the last two years who is a committed barefoot hiker. He goes everywhere the rest of us go with no problem. He and his cult of barefoot hikers claim they have fewer injuries than shoe and boot wearers because their bodies are exactly as designed without interference from unnatural mechanics.

    He has however gotten a sliver now and then, and of course a bare foot is exposed to a more sever cut, especially when we are bushwhacking over covered ground.

    Personally I'd stick with at least minimalist foot coverings to protect the soles of your feet. Minor cuts can easily turn into deadly infections.

    I also think it is just asking for trouble, going around without proper boots.

    Ditto's with the WoAk on this one.. Unless you're a POW or Cody Lundin, I wouldn't recommend running or walking barefoot anywhere besides your living room..

    Interesting i thought you guys would be more open to this! Ive been doing alot of running and i get the absolute worst shin splints ever. Im 6-5 and pretty lean but i still pound alot of weight down on my feet and a friend of mine told me about the book born to run so i read it and ive gone further into research and read the theories and I honestly think its better for you. I agree about cuts and infection, i agree about safety and defense for your feet. I think overall barefoot hiking is better and healthier (from what ive read) but I think there are instances where you need protection and there are instances where you want boots. As far as running goes... i do alot of trail running. I ran/hiked in the vibram 5 fingers yesterday and it was pretty awesome. My legs got a little bit of a different workout than normal. My calfs were tight as hell because of the difference in which you run when you dont have as much weight on your feet. My feet were actually beginning to cramp towards the end which has never happened because your feet actually have to do some work when you run with a more minimalist footwear approach. Overall im pretty excited but the biggest thing to barefoot running from what everyone tells me is gradually building into it. So itll take me a good long while before i can actually pick a side.

    sure it'll make your feet stronger, and the soles more tough and leathery but that aint going to help when you step on a nail, or a piece of broken glass in the grass, or some rusting piece of metal laying jagged and all juicy with tetanus for you

    While I'm sure hiking (or running) barefoot might be great for your feet in the long run, the chance of something disastrous happening short term would be too high. Until you build up some really thick callouses on your soles, you will be exposing yourself to some big dangers, and could end up with a serious infection. By the time you do build up the soles of your feet , you will begin to look like a hobbit- I'm sure your wife or girlfriend won't appreciate that very much. You are just asking for a serious condition like lyme disease from a tick bite, and are leaving yourself exposed to things like scorpion stings, or even snake bites! Not a good plan man, sorry!
