    Deer Flies

Just returned from a week in the North Cascades National Park. Battled deer flies the entire time. Thousands of them. Everything else - the views, the weather, the friends - was perfect. Constant slathering of 99% deet (Jungle Juice) reduced the number on my body by about 75% but didn't stop them. They also died down about one hour before sun down each night. Other than netting or staying home, is there anything else you guys have successfully used on deer flies?

Natural oils are good for repelling flies, as long as it isn't one that attracts them, lemon, lemongrass, eucalyptus oil are all good ones. I have an old shea butter that was mixed with lemon essential oil and it worked great to keep the flies away and offered a natural protection from the sun. Deer and horse flies are just one of nature's annoying residents and during certain times of the year we just have to tolerate them, but finding a deterrent so they don't eat you up is a must do.

Up in Maine we have black flies. Same scenario, annoying, never leave you alone...oh and the mosquitoes are as thick as blankets some times. They come up in the early AM, then die down, then in the evening hours they swarm, then die down as the sun goes down. I haven't found the perfect solution. I sort of accepted that I am going to be bitten, let them bite me and thats the end of it. Or if they are extremely bad I seek refuge in my netted hammock. Jeez if I could remember this product my buddy has that he often shares with me i would share it with you. I tried searching on google but I cant find it. It comes in a brown bottle with a green label. It is all natural and has eucalyptus...perhaps. It works well, but like your solution, only shoos away about 75% and you need to apply often.
