    Survival 101

Im planning to trail the appalachian mountains with my bro and whoever comes along in 2010. I was interested in taking a survival course. Does anyone have an idea as to where one may be?

i guess you could look into NOLS, but i hardly think you'd need a survival course to prepare you for the AT. unless you're a city boy

It depends on what survival means.

Tom Brown's courses are pretty straight forward. One of the most important things about a survival course of any kind is that it gives you confidence. If you're new to hiking that may be well worth the time and money.

i would say, if you are worried, a first aid class will be more beneficial on the trail than a survival class

read, read, read! there is a lot of material out there to read about survival.

The most important thing to me is safety. having a good first aid set up is nothing if you dont know how to use it. with my eperiance you are more likely to use a first aid kit then know how to catch and cook a snake over an open fire.

PS survival stuff is really cool and fun to learn and i have read and gone to a few things for it but yea safety is key when good goes to bad.
