Re:Trail Foods - 2008/08/05 04:45 I bring a bunch of PowerBars. 1 will leave you satisfied for a meal. I also use Mountain House dehydrated meals with the Mountain House Flameless Oven. Just add water and in 15 minutes you have a hot meal--no matches or fire needed--great when it rains. The meals and oven are light--Can purchase at most outdoor retailers. If I need to hike light for a few days, I'll take ASAP chocolate meal drinks (www.nqinutrition.com). Thin, light disposable pouches--just add water and you have a high protein meal--does the job.

Re:Trail Foods - 2008/08/06 03:00 I like to carry granola bars and trail mix for breakfast and on the go food. Also like the Mountain House meals. Very good and filling in the evening after a long day of hiking. I also like to carry a small personal size bottle of wine for the last night. Kind of a muscle relaxer for the last days push.

Re:Trail Foods - 2008/08/06 06:15 Rick,

I love a good wine myself, but a warm-heated bottle makes me a little queezy. How do you deal with that?

Re:Trail Foods - 2008/08/07 02:14 There are a couple of ways I do this. One is that I like to hike where there will be water, so I put the bottle in an onion sack, tie it to a piece of rope, and drop it in the stream / lake. Another thing I like to do in the spring or fall is put the wine bottle in a nalgene and fill with water. Then put it in the freezer. It will stay cool in your pack for 2-3 days as the ice melts.

Re:Trail Foods - 2008/08/19 18:34 We make a bunch of bannock the day before heading out, and bring a metal tin of jam. It's great at any time of the day and your stomach feels full for hours after a couple bannock biscuits.

Re:Trail Foods - 2008/12/17 05:21 Jerky. Little snack packs (Sam's club bulk boxes... you know the stuff your mom might have put in a lunch box... single serve chips, mixed nuts, raisens, etc), or just hit the subway before the trail. Seriously. A good ol' sammich after a particularly rough section of trail is sublime.

Re:Trail Foods - 2009/03/16 04:39 mixed nuts, fig newtons, trail mix. For something warm on the stove try lentils with a boullion cube. It takes about 20 min of low heat once it boils.
