twiggy stoves - 2009/01/23 19:01 Hi,

I am looking for super lightweight backcountry cooking stoves, and I've heard about some that use twigs and are apparently super light. Has anyone heard of or used one of these? I'm assuming they must be homemade. Would appreciate any info.

Cheers!
Scott

Re:twiggy stoves - 2009/02/25 14:16 Do a search on "zenstoves". There's a list of virtually any kind of usable stove there. I've tinkered with a few of the designs, (mostly alcohol types).

Re:twiggy stoves - 2009/03/19 02:13 I would honestly just invest in a titanium pot, like the snow peak 700...and just make a fire and put this next to it...

Re:twiggy stoves - 2009/03/19 02:22 The only thing I dont like about the twig stoves is...well what to do if your planned fuel is wet?

To me alcohol is much more reliable.

Re:twiggy stoves - 2009/03/19 04:28 i think the idea with the higher end twig stoves is that they burn so hot it doesn't matter if the wood is a bit damp, so long as you can get it started...

i've actually gotten back into trying out my own twig stove again. had to stop b/c i burned down the dremmel cutter thing i was using. i'll be back at it this weekend.

btw, has anyone seen my camera?

Re:twiggy stoves - 2009/03/20 00:27 was it a DSLR? If so you'd better dry the lens out real good, so it doesnt grow fungus.

Re:twiggy stoves - 2009/03/20 17:40 On most cameras, if the lens is subjected to moisture and outdoor contaminates, it can grow a fungus that can grow on the lens and pretty much eat the coatings and etch the lens.

Just dry it and clean it out really well, hopefully you wont have a problem.

Re:twiggy stoves - 2009/03/25 22:32 i finally got around to giving this wood stove a try! however we're currently in a burn ban in PA so i can't try it out yet

i'm unsure whether to use a grating across the flaps on the inside or not. will be able to tell after i use it a few times

top view

side view

side view w/ pot on it - port should be large enough to feed twigs into the stove while it's burning

Re:twiggy stoves - 2009/03/26 01:31 That thing looks neat. The droughts that bad down there huh? I'm visiting my folks in Jersey next week so I'm hoping the weather will at least be in the 50's this way I can get a taste of spring.

I went hiking today on a new trail in town, and before I left I was filling my bottle of alcohol and spilled some on my wooden dresser. Took the shlack right off! haha, I might just do the rest of the dresser, looks pretty cool hah.

Re:twiggy stoves - 2009/04/03 03:43 the wood stove worked!!! i still have to work on my fire building skills and maybe some adjustments to the design (bigger flaps at the bottom) but it worked! just built the twig part of the fire, and put the tinder down in the bottom (some dryer lint), lit the lint, blew on it and it went up. i fed it for awhile, then put my pot on and am now enjoying a nice cup of peppermint tea!

if i can get the kinks out of this and am able to do it while it's raining, this may be huge for me. not having to mess around w/ fuel would be awesome!

pictures to follow soon
