My favorite hikes are "loops" as opposed to "there and backs".... In the Los Angeles area, my favorite hike is about a 2.5 hour loop up to Sandstone Peak and then through the Mishe Mokwa Trail loop. The hike features stunning views. Here's a video:

The White mountains have a lot of loops. I just did the Isolation trail loop on Memorial day.
Loops are nice because you avoid the redundancy of backtracking through stuff you have already seen on the way in.

Post edited by: NewEnglander, at: 2007/06/01 03:28

New Englander, thanks for the reply. Do you have an recommended links for videos or photos on the White Mountains? I am not familiar with them. I'm a West Coaster... I'll be in DC in July and am hoping to get my first glimpse of outdoor life on the East Coast....Keep hiking! - Bill

The Whites are spectacular in the fall. Not only the mountains themselves but the ride up there going through the small New Hampshire towns.

Took a look at our White Mountains link. Fantastic. I'll put your area on my must remember to hike and backpack list.
