I just thought I would throw this out there since I've been reading allot about these to mixed reviews so wanted to see if anyone uses a neck knife while on the trail and what their thoughts were about it?

Cheers,
Serge

Not me. I have never used one. I can't seem to recall knowing anyone who used one either.

I just picked up a Muela Colibri with a 3" blade, brass bolster, and a very nice stag handle. It weighs in at about 3 ounces also.

This would definitely fit the criteria for a neck knife similiar to the Folts Minimalist which is all the rage due to it's size and weight. Plus the Colibri feels really good in the hand especially for it's size.

Just need to get a nice Kydex sheath made for it since the leather sheath although OK, is just to small for either belt wear and to cumbersome to be realisic for neck carry.

Serge

Yeah, I love em, they are great if you do not want to have to un button a sheath or go through all of that. http://budk.com/Knives/Tactical-Warrior-Neck-Knife? Best knife I own, don't let the price fool you, mine is almost 10 years old and still kicking butt.

yeah, but what can you do with a knife that small?

Well it depends if you use it in tandem with somerhing else. I would wear the neck knife for quick access to a sharp blade around my neck, but on my belt, I would also carry a decent multitool to compensate.

Once again it depends where you are going to be hiking, in the wilds of BC or a well worn trail outside the suburbs where the need for a large fixed blade isn't really necessary.

A neck knife is a fixed blade alternative to carrying a tactical folder, quick access without dealing with flaps, or pockets to get too when you need to cut something fast.

Serge

Good point swoosh, but that's where kydex comes in.. As for Cody, he carries a Mora # 3 I believe which is decent but I'm thinking about smaller and lighter may be better..

IMO it's not going to be useful. As mentioned it's to small for any real work. I have Leatherman in my pack and carry a Buck 110 on my belt.

neck knives are a wonderful thing guys as far as small blades if your blade is sharp it will do what you need it to. i have cut rope with the smallest little spyderco thumb knives even p-90 can openers. lanyards can be dangerous but you can also get release buckles or even a button knot. i carry sheathed knife around my neck that i also tether to my belt so that i can easily reach it upside down " a little ninja trick" if the handle on a sheathed knife is facing down you do not have to reach up over your belt to draw the blade also this helps to conceal a large blade so that you dont look like john rambo with a machete hanging from your hip. but you must have a lanyard attached to the bottom of your sheath to wear around your neck so that you dont get the dreaded death boner that is obtained from wearing a large sheathed fixed blade knife upside down on your belt. but for you guys who like a big useful knife and dont want to look like you are going off to war with a bayonet hanging off your hip this is a neat way of concealing it from peering eyes and having a smoother more easily reached draw of your pig sticker.

I disagree, small knives can be very useful around a casual campsite. I prefer a small pocket folder with a clip, non-serrated (mini-lawman from cold steel) but I know a few people who like their neck knives just as much. I carry a fixed blade in my pack on some trips for any harder work but seldom use it.

Although I usually pack a Buck folder on my belt with at MT in my pack, I've decided to give a decent knife knife a try.. I picked up a Muela Colibri, with a stag handle, and a 3" drop point blade. I recently sent it out to a fellow in AZ who's going to make a custom pancake style Kydex sheath for around the neck inverted carry.

I'll post pics once it arrives..

Does this fellow live in a town named Ash Fork, AZ? I know of a guy there that would do that sort of thing. And he's well known

nice i love knifes hahaha anyone seen the dajo survivor knife its under 40 bucks you can even find it cheaper i grabbed one thing is very solid for such a cheap fixed blade. http://www.google.com/products/catalog?oe=utf-8&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a&q=dajo&um=1&ie=UTF-8&cid=2899504233102973486&sa=X&ei=ZV-gTZ6JGNGi0gGRpOScBQ&ved=0CCoQ8wIwAg#

Looks neat, but it's most likely Chicom crap that would be better off suited as a fishing sinker. If it's cheap, it'll perform as much..

Knives are for pockets. I've never heard of carrying a knife around your neck. Doesn't make sense to me, kinda like running with scissors. I carry a Gerber EZ out.

Well my Muela 3" drop point arrived today after being fit for a kydex sheath for neck carry and I have to say came out fantastic! I'm looking forward to this weeking when I will be putting it to the test and determine if neck is superior over waist carry..

serge man dajo is a solid blade, for Chinese stainless i have used it as a foot peg to climb up into a tree that i could not reach low branches on put my 180lbs on it and jumped up off of it and the tip is still straight! it is holding its edge nicely i do not treat knives nicely either. ive popped wood crates with metal strapping with it as well. the sheathe is crap though if your looking for a good fixed blade knife and do not want to spend more than 50 bucks its worth it. i paid i think 28 dollars for mine on amazon.

ZD,
I"ll have to check it out, especially since the price is too good to pass up after that beating you put it through.. I also just picked up a Mike Horn designed Wenger Ranger multitool which also was made from recycled materials.. Stay tuned for a quick review as well as some pics..

Serge

Cool idea, but I found that mine swung around too much even with a shorter string to be very convenient. Wearing one on your belt with some type of quick release is much more convenient. Plus if you wear it under your shirt the sweat will drive you up a wall! But give it a try, with a cheap one you won't have byers remorse if you don't like it.

Here's a link to a quick and otherwise decent review of the Dajo survival knife, thoughts?
