this just happened to me. thought i was going to have to reformat, which is a major pain in the ass!

so i got a virus, knew it immediately. immediately unplugged my computer from the internet (always the 1st thing to do). i remembered something an old computer geek buddy of mine taught me and i went to Start/All Programs/Accessories/System Tools. once there i chose "system restore". there i clicked on "restore to an earlier date" and chose yesterday. computer restarts and BOOM, virus gone. basically, what this feature does, is transports your computer back to that exact date. it's a really neat feature and saved me probably half a day of work on the PC. just thought i'd put it out there. i think i lost a little bit of data (whatever i was working on b/t now and then) but it sure beats the pants off of a reformat or running a virus destroying program like bruteforce.

swoosh that is good for if one doesn't mind to lose the last (24?) hours of memory.
i am sure there must be something to prevent those malicious programs (as viruses) to even try to enter our pc's. No?

I know its a bit late to jump in on this discussion but I thought I would give my two cents. I use three programs(all free) to keep my computer as safe as i can from viruses.
Malwarebytes
http://www.malwarebytes.org/
Lavasoft Adaware
http://www.lavasoft.com/
And
Avast
http://www.avast.com/eng/avast-virus-cleaner.html

Like I said all are completely free and with regular scans(I use a different one once or twice a week), my computer has been well-protected.

Post edited by: waxx, at: 2008/11/19 19:43

I don't have any AV or AS software on my computer and I do fine. Although, my job is Desktop Support, so for the average user, I would recommend putting software on your PC.
I often do side jobs, to make some extra cash. Some people bring in the craziest infections and I manage to get them off, with one super tool, Google. Windows, or you software will tell you "Your PC is infected with troj.zlan (or whatever virus name)" then just google the virus name and removal. READ THE FORUMS! DON'T JUST GO DOWNLOADING RANDOM STUFF, UNLESS A BUNCH OF PEOPLE HAVE TRIED IT.
Another great tool is PREVENTION. If you see a pop-up that says "Your computer has 328 (or some other #) infections found" and it isn't Norton or whatever AV/AS software telling you, HIT THE X button. If you don't have AV/AS software, windows will tell you, with a little bubble window out of the bottom right-hand side of your screen. If something says "Download a video codec" and its not from Macromedia, Adobe, Apple Quicktime or Microsoft, DO NOT DOWNLOAD IT.
