Not sure how many out there are interested in desert hiking. Over Labor Day Weekend, I had the opportunity to hike the Guadalupe Mountains in Far West Texas. Incredibly, the desert it was not. It rained for three straight days prior to the hike, making for some of the thickest wildflowers at higher elevations that I have ever seen!!! Quite a show.
For those interested, there is a nice 2-day (or 1 if you're nuts) hike from Dog Canyon Campground to the McKitterick Canyon Visitor Center. There is a portion of the trail where it drops into the canyon quite rapidly...2600 feet descent in 4 miles. I was impressed. There are parts of that canyon that would rival Zion for its sheer and rugged beauty.
Can anybody recommend any other hidden treasures among the thorns and scrub?
