The oldest Long Distance Hiking trail in modern America(do not start with wagon trails and such) This was built specifically for recreation. Starting at the VT /MA border it runs 280 miles north to the Canadian border. Great trail to get the LDH experience, if you only have a month to hike. Come out in August, no BUGS.

The weather in New England, from June Thru August can be very hot and humid. Typically 80 degrees, thats farenheit. Of course the higher the elevation, the cooler the weather. MT Washington,(6280Feet) NH can be 35 degrees at the top and 80 down below.

The temperature difference in August wont be as severe as Washington. But Mansfield (4393 ft.) which is the highest peak on the long trail can have somewhat rough weather. The last time I did it, in August of '06, it was about 40 degrees with a fairly strong wind and raining, which is probably about the worst you'll get (on average) that time of year.
