Ok so here's my newest and most random quesion... What size tent should we get? I have back and knee issues so I have to be a light if not ultralight backpacker.

The people who I am planning on hiking together are my boyfriend and I and possibly our terrifing 9 lb puppy. Do you think a two or three person tent would be best for us, her and our gear?

will the puppy be in the tent at night or under the vestibule? how big are you and your bf? do you like to cuddle all night or do you prefer to have your own space?

weight is always a concern, but if there's 2 of you going out, you can always split the weight of the shared items (tent/cookware)

I'm 5'3 adnd I guess kinda small, he's 5'7 I think and about average build. Our little fuz face would sleep in the tent, most likely under one of us. She's 9 pounds and about the size of an average house cat.

We tend to want our own space, I'm a ciddle bug, he's not.

Weight is a concern, but I want something that I can use when I'm on my own as well.

Thanks for the help!!

a tarptent (HS rainshadow for example) may give you the best options as far as size flexibility (for 1 or for 2 + dog) and low weight. you'll be hard pressed to find a tent big enough for you/bf and dog that doesn't weigh over 5 lbs. remember, the majority of 2 person tents aren't big enough for 2 people to sleep comfortably.

other than that you'll probably want a tent w/ 40+ sq inches of floorspace. that should give you enough room for you, bf, and doggie.

I dont think I would recommend a tarptent. Little puppy might decide to go on a vacation during the middle of the night, unless he's on a leash. Id check out the MSR Fling for a lightweight option. Its around 3lbs and will fit two people. Plus its enclosed, so puppy will stay safe. It will be nice and cozy, but it should have enough room for the two of you, puppy, and you might even be able to fit the gear inside too.
