View Full Version : Hiking and Camping in Eastern PA for newbie

If my user name hasn't given it away, I'm a total newbie to any camping or hiking of any kind. I camped a few times as a kid but nothing as an adult. I just started dating a girl who's interested in camping and hiking so, here I am!

I'm looking for weekend / extended weekend trips that will get me close to nature and offer breath taking views. I'd like to do some hiking and perhaps backpacking. Facilities for bathing and such would be a plus. I'm not really interested in big camp grounds or grounds for RVs or family oriented activities. Just some place awesome that I can spend some alone time with nature and my date. The only thing that really bugs me (crap, pun not intended here!) about nature is swarms of flys and mosquitoes, etc.

So priorities are breath taking view (cliffs, waterfalls, clear streams), friendly towards small tents, and secluded but not remote. Oh, I guess it should be safe enough for non-eXtreme hikers, but the bunny trail would be pretty boring too.

Hope I can get some suggestions, thanks!!

Post edited by: new2nature, at: 2008/06/09 04:35

Before doing overnights I'd do lots of longer day trips, if you haven't already. Go to some place where you get some wilderness, if possible. Start out with a few hours and go to a day. Get good shoes or boots.

New2nature, welcome to the forum :) I hope you will like it here.

Des says it. It is really preferable to go on a day hike before you set off for a weekend. Would you consider that?

Rickets Glen is a must for it's waterfalls
World's End is a great park for hiking.
